Paintings, Drawings and Assemblage Sculptures 1999- 2001

This series of non-objective work began in Italy during a semester of independent study with Metropolitan State College of Denver. During that period my investigation was about the metaphysical nature of objects in relation to phenomenology and the theory of dark matter as discussed in physics. I was searching for a universal denominator and identifier of interconnection and inter-dependency that linked all things. Scientifically, as if viewed under a microscope, I reduced objects to dark shapes, either organic or inanimate, and used lines, language and numbers to suggest that all things are interrelated because they are measurable and definable when observed or experienced. Substrates are highly textured, breaking with the stagnation of flat and geometric symmetry of a canvas or wood panel surface. This gravitation to an organic surface promoted resistance and difficulty in achieving a hard edge during the painting process.
