Paintings, Drawings and Assemblage Sculptures 1999 - 2001

This series of paintings, drawings, and assemblage sculptures began in Italy during a semester of independent study with Metropolitan State College of Denver. During that period my investigation was about the metaphysical nature of objects in relation to phenomenology and the theory of dark matter as discussed in physics. I was searching for a universal denominator and identifier of interconnection and interdependency that linked all things. The perspective that I visually experimented with was from inside the object at a microscopic level, thus reducing objects to dark floating amoebic shapes, signifiers of organic or inanimate objects with the understanding that all things posses vibrational frequencies at an atomic level. Lines, language and numbers represent a logical deduction, suggesting that all things are interrelated because they are measurable and definable when observed or experienced. Substrates are highly textured, breaking the stagnation of the flat and geometric symmetry of a canvas or wood panel surface. This gravitation to an undulating and less predictable organic surface promoted resistance and difficulty in achieving a hard or definitive edge during the painting process.
